What The Show I Binged Said About Each Year In College

"Each episode was like a new day, I didn't know what was going to happen but It was always a welcomed surprise"

Freshman Year

The start of college is full of excitement. Who will I meet? What will I get involved in? Which major will I choose? These were questions on my mind, and I was very excited to find out how I would answer them. I had been looking forward to college for years and I had finally made it. What better way to signify that I was officially a college student than to binge watch arguably the most beloved show by college students out there… The Office.

The office, much like college, was new to me. Each episode was like a new day, I didn't know what was going to happen, but it was always a surprise. Freshman year for me was a generally happy year so it's fitting that a comedy was my go to binge-watch.

Honorable mention: ‘Stranger Things’. Unfortunately, I binged this show during finals… oops. Overall, a great show and I can’t wait for the new season.

Sophomore Year

This year would better be labeled COVID year. We were sent home from campus early and continued the rest of the semester online. This was without a doubt the most difficult year for me in terms of mental health. I needed to pick a major, classes were ramping up, I needed an internship, and most importantly, I needed a new show. Enter ‘New Girl’.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “isn’t that a chick flick?” Yes, yes it is. And a darn good one so don’t come at me. This show had a good mix of comedy and relevant experiences between what the characters were going through and what I was experiencing at the same time. In the show, the characters were navigating living with a new roommate, as was I at the time. Also, some of the characters were from Chicago so some of the more subtle jokes resonated with me on a more relatable level.

Overall, this show was timely for me because I was able to relax and enjoy the comedy at a time when I was stuck at home and there wasn’t much else to laugh about.

Junior Year

My third year of college was a turning point of sorts. I was finally back on campus after what felt like an eternity of being home during the global pandemic, my new campus job was in full-swing, and I had a house with some new roommates who had become very close friends. Enter a new show that seemed fitting for the time, ‘Friends’

Another show seemingly unanimously loved by college students. Full of laughable moments, complicated relationships, and dynamic characters, this show represented my year. Keeping up with the comedic trend, this show coincided with a lot of the funny memories I have from Junior year. The short episodes were perfect for in between my increasingly difficult classes and overall, I really enjoyed the show.

Senior Year

Though the year has just begun, I have already begun binging a new show. Despite some sporadic comedic moments, the show is more serious and action-packed than the others. This shift might say something about how my mindset may have changed since last year. As a senior, I know this year is a last chance of sorts to “live while I'm young” while I have less responsibilities than I will in the coming years. I am enjoying every moment and doing things I may have not done in previous years because I am starting to have some “lasts”. I know I'm late getting to watch this show, but I do like that I have multiple seasons to look forward to. Enter, ‘Peaky Blinders’.

For those who don’t know, Peaky Blinders is a drama set in post-World War One Britain and it follows a gang called the Peaky Blinders as they expand their power. While I can't relate to the illegal activities that the family partakes in, I can relate to how action packed it is.

This year has been eventful, and it is still just getting started. Much like this show, I can't wait to see what the rest of this year has in store. I hope its even half as action-packed as this show.

Thanks for reading!
